Trail D1 - Biking tour of Monti Castello and Santa Viola

Biking tour with a considerable elevation gain, dirt road stretches, and wide views on both sides of the coast road.

Length: 21 km

Difference in altitude: 730 mt

Travel time (hours): variable

Suitable for: Cyclists

Trail description

The long western ridge route between Monti Castello and Santa Viola, starts in Grezzana's centre, and climbs up the Forni district, toward Crosetta and Gualiva, in Verona's municipality. Once you reach the last one, on the ridge peak, continue north and pass La Croce crossroad, where amazing views open up; above La Croce, continue toward Erbino, Campari and Menegalli, and from there, on a dirt road, climb up the junction between the two mountains - stars of this tour.

Once you are back on the paved road, continue east, toward the amazing Casale di Sotto - an ancient palace (gated, since it's a private property). From the town's baito - where farmers would once dedicate themselves to cheesemaking - climb west up the dirt road, running along Casale di Sopra, and then continue north, bypassing Monte Santa Viola from the inside, until you reach La Tenda.

Here, you are once again on the paved road. Start your descent south, to complete the tour toward Cerzuni, Vallene and Azzago.

From this scenic fraction, take a pleasant downhill road toward Lumiago, La Colombara and Romagnano, and then get back to Forni, on the outward road, and lastly to Grezzana.

The path can also be followed clockwise.

* In Azzago town's center you can also decide to combine trails C1 and D1 through the connecting path C3, which in 1,8km with a mild altitude difference allows you to reach Busoni. In Busoni, you can whether to follow the C1 trail towards Rosaro or towards Grezzana.
